The focus of the interdisciplinary conference at the ZAZ Zentrum Architektur Zürich is on current cultural and architectural processes in Georgia's capital. Our speakers will present examples of the rapid change in the city, discuss it in an intercultural way and build the bridge to Switzerland and Zurich. The conference is complemented by an installation, which deals with an example of an imaginary landscape, in the broadest sense with the "cultural" destruction of the human environment, and examines the application of basic principles of social construction discourse in Georgia.
Mount Mtatsminda’s craggy crest overlooks Tbilisi’s western side. Mtatsminda means the "Holy Mountain" in Georgian and is the highest (727m) of all the other mountains surrounding the city.
In Sololaki, a district leaning against a steeply sloping mountain wall, old and new are colliding and merciless focus on profits. The exploitation of the landscape at the foot of the mountain through speculation projects has an enormous impact on the cityscape. The new dwellings “climb” up to the top of the mountain and are investments that serve to maximize profits. The cultural causes of environmental degradation in Tbilisi include the private construction industry, which above all satisfies the needs of an emerging upper middle class.
The project will take place within the framework of the Georgian cultural festival "Brücke: Zürich – Tbilissi".

Der Fokus der interdisziplinären Tagung im ZAZ Zentrum Architektur Zürich, liegt auf aktuellen Kultur- und Architekturprozessen in Georgiens Hauptstadt. Unsere Referent*innen werden den bestehenden rasanten Wandel in der Stadt an Beispielen vorstellen, ihn interkulturell diskutieren und die Brücke in die Schweiz, nach Zürich, schlagen. Ergänzt wird die Tagung durch eine Installation, welche sich mit einem Beispiel einer imaginären Bebauung, im weitesten Sinne mit der „kulturellen“ Zerstörung der Umwelt des Menschen, beschäftigt und die Anwendung von grundlegenden Prinzipien des gesellschaftlichen Baudiskurses in Georgien untersucht.
Der zerklüftete Kamm des Berges Mtazminda überragt die Westseite von Tbilissi. Mtazminda bedeutet auf Georgisch "Heiliger Berg" und ist der höchste (727m) aller Berge, die Stadt umgeben. In Sololaki, ein an einer steil abfallenden Bergwand angelehntes Quartier, prallt gerade Alt und Neu zusammen und es wird gnadenlos Profit erwirtschaftet. Die planvolle Ausbeutung der Landschaft am Fuß des Berges durch Spekulationsprojekte hat enorme Auswirkungen auf das Stadtbild. Die neuen Behausungen „klettern“ bis zur Bergspitze hoch und sind Investments, die der Gewinnmaximierung dienen. Zu den kulturellen Ursachen der Umweltzerstörung in Tbilissi zählt die privatwirtschaftliche Bauindustrie, die vor allem die Bedürfnisse einer aufstrebenden oberen Mittelschicht befriedigt.
Das Projekt findet im Rahmen des georgischen Kulturfestivals "Brücke: Zürich – Tbilissi" statt.
