Irina Kurtishvili’s project is an installation of small series apartments that can be stacked in luxurious high-rise buildings, but they also can be considered separately. These models in a 1:50 scale are so-called Euro Buildings composed of 100 individual elements. Each apartment tells its own story, illustrated by the furniture and the human figurines placed there. The apartments are partly occupied or are currently in Remont
(= Russian for renovation). They might be rented or purchased, they might be touted in ads as Eurodesigned or Euro renovated. The three-dimensional models and associated drawings and photo collages simulate a Brave New World in the sense of Aldous Huxley, a world which is currently being built. In many former Soviet republics it may stand for ideas of modernity, convenience and status, for cutting old braids and building a new age.
The exhibition is being held in the framework of A TRANS’s series A Private City.

Das Projekt EUROSTYLE ist eine Installation aus kleinen Serienwohnungen, die man sich stapelbar in luxuriösen Hochhäusern vorstellen kann; man kann sie allerdings auch auseinandernehmen und einzeln betrachten. Diese im Maßstab 1:50 erstellten Modelle bilden so genannte Eurobuildings aus 100 Einzelelementen. Jede Wohnung erzählt eine eigene Geschichte, die durch die Möblierung und die dort aufgestellten menschlichen Figurinen erzählt wird. Die Appartements sind teils bewohnt oder befinden sich gerade in Remont (Russisch für Renovierung). Sie können gemietet oder gekauft werden, werden in Kleinanzeigen allesamt als Eurodesigned und Euro renovated angepriesen. Die Modelle, Zeichnungen und Fotocollagen simulieren eine schöne neue Welt im Sinne Aldous Huxleys, die gerade neu entsteht und in vielen ehemaligen Sowjetrepubliken für Moderne, Bequemlichkeit und Status stehen mag, für ein Abschneiden alter Zöpfe und ein neues Zeitalter.
Die Ausstellung findet im Rahmen der ATRANS Reihe A Private City statt.

EUROSTYLE explores a building and interior design style that emerged across the post-Soviet region and became associated with ideas of modernity, prosperity, and an imagined “European way of life.” Through miniature architectural models and spatial interventions, the project reflects on collective aspirations, hopes, and disappointments situated between local realities and projections of Europe. This publication documents the project through photographs and critical commentary.

EUROSTYLE untersucht einen im postsowjetischen Raum verbreiteten Baustil, der mit Vorstellungen von Modernität, Wohlstand und einem vermeintlich „europäischen Leben“ verbunden wird. Anhand miniaturisierter Architekturen und räumlicher Interventionen reflektiert das Projekt gesellschaftliche Träume, Hoffnungen und Enttäuschungen im Spannungsfeld zwischen lokaler Realität und europäischer Imaginationswelt. In diese Broschüre wird das Projekt ausführlich mit Fotos und Textkommentaren dokumentiert.
