Sergei Parajanov (1924-1990). The artist who mostly lived and worked in Georgia and most of whose films are depicting the idiosyncratic history and epos of the Caucasus, created a highly stylised world of fairy tales and legends, emerging as an alternative reality to the communist ideology in art. Parajanov´s works hover on the verge of dream and reality with sumptuous oriental-flavored opulence capturing the last remnants of the particular culture reigning in the region in the beginning of the last century and before. This particular period and some of the leading Georgian and Armenian actors featuring in his films have already long ceased to exist with the onslaught of modernity. Lily Khositashvili “Parajanov, Sheep and Women at Berlin International Film Festival” “Georgia Today” ” issue 345 / Tbilisi Georgia

Parajanov´s visionary films, such as “The Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors”, “Sayat-Nova” and “The Legend of Suram Fortress” earned him international acclaim and led to lifelong persecution by the Soviet regime.

LOCATION GEORGIEN

Foto Exhibition and Film Event.

The exhibition “Location: Georgien” presents photographs shot by German directors, photographers and journalists during their visits to Georgia. The exibition consisting of more than 100 exhibits was shown in Cologne, Berlin and in Tbilisi.

The idea of the exhibition is expressed in its title “location: Georgien”: it is about one place in the world – Georgia, in a cinematographic sense. Different visions of German artists describe specific aspects of the country from specific viewpoints. The exhibition is an attempt to comment on an affluent Georgian cultural phenomenon. What is Georgia and the Caucasus for the European perception? What does the Western civilization mean for Georgia today? Do Georgians admit and regret their mistakes or still blame someone else for everything? These are some of the questions that the authors of the works represented at the exhibition try to answer.
